On back handwritten in blue ink “R.WARBURTON”, and underneath written in pencil “SS Pera / Gallipoli”.
This photograph of Raymond Parker WARBURTON and other crew members has been taken on the deck of the, ‘SS Pera’, and states on the rear that they were at Gallipoli.
Raymond was employed as an Electrical Engineer on board the Admiralty Transport Pera. HMAT A4 Pera, a transport ship owned by P&O London, and leased by the Commonwealth during the First World War. Raymond served on the ‘SS Pera’ between 01/12/1915 and 09/09/1917.
SS Pera was used to transport Australian and New Zealand troops overseas and was of the ships of the first convoy amassed in King George Sound, Albany WA. The convoy departed 01/11/1914; onboard the ‘SS Pera’ at departure was 90 soldiers, 6 nurses and 391 horses.
On the 19/10/1917 the ‘SS Pera’ was torpedoed and sunk in Mediterranean Sea.
