During the First World War the P&O Line (Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company) passenger ships were requisitioned by the British Government and converted to troop carriers, (HMATs) and hospital ships. The HMAT Pera was one of the P&O steamship’s involved and was used to transport troops and horses during the war. Merchant seaman Raymond Parker WARBURTON was employed as an Electrical Engineer on the ‘Pera’. Raymond was on board when the ‘Pera’ formed part of the first convey, sailing from Albany Western Australia on the 1st November 1914.
