Black and white group photograph of five Merchant Seamen, taken onboard the HMAT Pera. Three men are standing and two seated in front. Raymond Parker WARBURTON is standing centre with the seaman standing on left dressed in a white officer uniform. All men are in uniform with caps, and the seaman seated on left is holding a smoking pipe. Photograph is held in a white photograph envelope, with cover opening to the left and has gold edging on right side of cover. A sailing ship is embossed on the front cover and inside has 4 crescent shaped slots to hold photograph.

Contextual information

The group photograph of five seamen was taken onboard the HMAT A4 Pera. Raymond Parker WARBURTON, who is standing centre, was employed as an Electrical Engineer on this troopship during the First World War. The HMAT Pera, a transport ship owned by P&O London, was leased by the Commonwealth. Raymond was employed on 1/12/1915 in London and was discharged on the 09/09/1917. The HMAT Pera was used to transport Australian and New Zealand troops overseas and was part of the first convoy amassed in King George Sound, Albany WA, departing on the 1st November 1914. Onboard that date was 90 soldiers, 6 nurses and 391 horses. The Pera was torpedoed and sunk in Mediterranean on the 19/10/1917.
