Characteristics of Appenzell embroidery stitched on fine batiste linen fabric include:
* Extremely fine satin stitch embroidery
* Tiny 5 petalled flowers in satin stitch
* Seeding used as a filler of leaves and flowers
* Finest buttonhole edging
* Pulled fabric in flowers and leaves
* Hemstitching ladder-like lines in the handkerchief and around the border.
