Overview

Rear of house. High white foundations and balustrading to balcony with enclosed section on south west corner. French doors and central doors, the lower one with sidelights and fanlight, opening onto verandah and balcony. Bay windows to rooms on right. Brick out buildings on right and steps down steep slope to terraced lawn with boat and equipment.

Historical information

50 Victoria Avenue, Claremont was built by Arthur Bunning in 1909. A large two-storey house with steeply pitched terracotta shingle roof that extended over the verandah. It was named Colwyn after a bay in Wales on the Irish Sea.

The property appears to be Lots 1 & 2 of portion of Swan location P253 which was originally a pensioner guard block.

Arthur's wife Evelyn disliked the strong winds off Freshwater Bay so much that Colwyn was sold to J B L. Weir in 1921. Sold to B W Nairn in 1947, The Waddy Waddy Pastoral Company Ltd in 1949 and then to J H C & E V Macaulay in 1953.

After being sold in 2006, underwent extensive conservation. During this time, the block was subdivided, and the lower, riverside portion was sold. The upper block, Colwyn, was sold again in 2011.

Contextual information

In 1906 the name Pensioner Terrace was changed to the 'more aristocratic' Victoria Avenue. Debate in the Claremont Roads Board was vigorous. The 19 Pensioner Guards who arrived with convicts in 1850 each received a residential half-acre lot along Freshwater Bay and a lot for cultivation at Butler's Swamp. Some favoured the recognition of the Pensioner Guards in the street name rather than Queen Victoria.
