79 Bay View Terrace, Claremont was built c.1901 on a 926 m² lot (aka 36.6 perches or just under a quarter of an acre in the 1900s terminology). The house was known as Ivanhoe. Owned by Edward and Elizabeth Sheppard from at least 1919-1922.

By the 1970s, the foundations of the house had sunk and it has been inhabited by squatters, so the decision was made to demolish the house rather than renovate it. Claremont Town Council put a demolition order on house in 1973.

Bay View Terrace was the principal thoroughfare through Claremont from the Railway Station to the foreshore at Freshwater Bay. Lots offered in 1885 boasted that the land was 'situated on the summit of a gentle rise and overlooking Freshwater Bay and within a very short distance of the sea.' The southern part of the 'terrace' was once called Humble Road. The views of the bay 'down the terrace' were lost from 1897, when a series of buildings, known as Matheson Terrace and later Bay View Mansions were constructed.
