Overview

Sepia Church of Christ Congregation standing in front of wooden church building.

Historical information

The basic weatherboard church was built in a day on the corner of Goldsworthy and Hammond Roads with a brick hall added at the back in the 1920s. The porch at the front was accessible from both sides and had wooden steps up to the double swing doors. Inside the chapel was not adorned in any way. There were jarrah pews and a platform from which ministers would speak. Under the platform was a tin baptistry for baptisms by full immersion. At the rear were swing doors opening into a hall used for social activities, kindergarten work, Sunday School, weddings, functions and anniversaries. The congregation was a large one in the early years with around sixty adults and between 120-150 children attended the Sunday school. Due to falling numbers in the 1950s, the congregation amalgamated with Church of Christ in Nedlands. In 1961 the church was sold and a new one built in Dalkeith Road, Nedlands, to create a more viable congregation.
