SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT: METRIC WEIGHTS IN WOODEN BOX

Overview

(a) Brass tweezers for handling milligram weights.
(b-i) Set of eight metric weights, stamped, comprising 20,10,5,2, and 1 gram units for weighing chemicals on a beam balance (see 94.148). All are tubular in shape with a round head pin on top. All are made of nickel-plated brass(?) except one of the 2 gram units which is made of brass only. All fit into holes in a bakelite form which carried the serial number 1-S-841-74, the name of the manufacturers 'GRIFFIN and TATLOCK LTD, London' and 'Microid Metric Weights'.
(j-n) Thin flat milligram weights of different shapes and sizes lie in compartments in front of gram weights. Include 500mg, 100mg, 20mg, and 10mg which is stamped onto their surface.
(o) The box which contains the set is made of wood with a hinged lid and brass clip fastening over a pin. The lid is lined with baize and a bakelite form with compartments and holes fits into the base of the box.

Historical information

These weights were used in Hale School laboratory. It is probable that they are not the original weights used with the beam balance (94.148).
