Contextual information

This treadle sewing machine was formerly owned by the donor's mother, Mrs. E. Doggett of 45 Hopetoun Tce, Shenton Park. These kinds of machines are operated by repeatedly treading on the foot pedal or ‘treadle’ to drive the needle in and out of the fabric.
The first treadle machines were invented in 1830 by a French tailor, Barthelmy Thimonnier. With a lucrative contract from the French government, he soon had 80 machines ready to go. Much to his disappointment, his factory was burnt down by local tailors who were fearful that the new machines would leave them unemployed.
The Jones Sewing Machine Company started in 1859 in the United Kingdom, proceeding to make sewing machines for almost 100 years. In 1968 the business was acquired by Brother Industries of Japan, but the Jones name still appeared on the machines till the late 1980s. The serial number of this machine (102606) dates it somewhere between 1891 and 1905, around the time that the electric sewing machine was invented by Singer in 1889.
