Historical information

The year 1969 has seen another twenty prefects come and go; twenty young men and women who have tried, it is hoped successfully, to help, lead and enrich life at school and to maintain the high standards of behaviour and dress expected of them.

The highlight of the year came with the Annual School Ball, the success of which was largely due to the valuable hours of work done by Mr. Rendell on the superb decorations. The ability of the prefects to work as a team was shown by the quick, efficient way the decorations were assembled at the hall. This was one of the few years when they have been finished and hung on time.

In terms of a good night’s entertainment the Lower School socials were almost as successful. Enjoyed by the majority of first and second years, these proved to be great financial successes.

Upper School socials were very popular — with those who attended. The fact the third, fourth and fifth years are infinitely harder to please was shown by the relatively small attendances. Co-operation from Upper School students would be much appreciated.

A new innovation to the prefects’ line of duties was the Lost Property Office, which has saved many people the cost of new textbooks or painstaking hours recopying notes.

Charity collection totals were down on last year’s totals, perhaps due to the new system whereby money is collected at House meetings. Nevertheless, lifesaving oxygen resuscitation equipment has been supplied to the St. John Ambulance Association. A motorised wheelchair and crutches were donated to the Red Cross and money was collected for the Rice Bowl Appeal.

Prefects are elected primarily to help the students. Student co-operation is therefore essential to the well-being of the school. Please remember this in 1970.

Best of luck to Junior and Leaving candidates and next year’s prefects.
