Overview

Second World War Japanese POW postcard sent from Pte L.O. Moir to his mother in Western Australia. Pre printed on thin aged card are statements to be crossed or left. On the front is Pte Moir’s details and his mother’s address plus some Japanese stamps. On the reverse in bold print at the top is “Japanese Imperial Army”, more printed statements and minimal handwriting by Pte Moir.

Inscriptions and markings

On front of card are various red ink stamps in Japanese and printed in black “From / Name / Nationality / Rank / Camp”. Pte Moir has filled these in with his details “L Moir / Australian / Driver / Camp 4 P.O.W Thailand”. Then “To” in print and handwritten by Pte Moir “Mrs G.C. Moir / Glenelg / Borden / West Australia”. There are also 2 sensor stamps in red and purple ink. On the reverse in bold print across the top is “IMPERIAL JAPANESE ARMY”. Also in smaller black print is ”I am interned in … / My health is excellent / I am ill in hospital / I am working for pay / I am not working / Please see that…is taken care / My love to you”. Pte Moir has handwritten “Thailand / family / All. Lloyd”. He has crossed out “I am ill in hospital” and “I am not working”.
