Jack Pettit, Katanning Hotel complimentary match box cover and wooden match box
c. 1913 - 1918White metal match box cover embossed on front and back. Contains wooden match box with tri colour paper cover of yellow, red and blue, depicting a steam train travelling through trees and mountains.
Item was in the possession of Leslie John Fleming service number 125 who enlisted at the age of 22 on 24 August 1914 and left Melbourne on 19 October 1914 on transport A24 Benalla which formed part of the 1st Convoy that convened at Albany, departing on 1 November 1914.
Fleming was wounded at Gallipoli on 6 August 1915 in the August offensive and never returned to active service. He was and eventually repatriated to Australia on 8 May 1916 arriving in Melbourne in June 1916.
The matchbox appears to be a promotional item for the Katanning Hotel given by the proprietor Jack (John Alfred) Pettit. Mr Pettit took possession of the hotel from mid-1913 and remained there until circa August 1918 when he moved to the Helena Vale Hotel.

Match box cover embossed "With compliments / from / Jack Pettit / KATANNING HOTEL / KATANNING" on one side and pattern on the back. Has some pencil markings on the side and back with “MADE IN ENGLAND” printed on the side.
Wooden match box with coloured paper graphics “The Empress / Average 40 matches / Safety matches / made in Sweden”. The Empress name printed at the top of the matchbox next to an image of the sun.
