The 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion was formed late in 1940 comprised entirely of Western Australians. After initial training in Northam W.A. they were moved to Adelaide then Darwin. Sailing via New Guinea, Sydney and Fremantle they eventually landed in Singapore just as the Japanese were preparing to attack the city. Within weeks a third of the battalion were either killed, missing or wounded and the remainder were imprisoned in POW camps.
