Historical information

Created to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the formation of the 2nd/4th Battalion in 1940. Formed towards the end of 1940 the 2nd/4th Machine Gun Battalion was made up entirely of Western Australians. They did their initial training at Northam before heading to South Australia for further training. Leaving Darwin in December 1941 they arrived in Singapore on January 25th, 1942, just as the Japanese were preparing to attack. By mid-February one third of the battalion had been killed, wounded, or were missing. The remainder were captured and spent the rest of the war in various concentration camps including the infamous Changi.
