Bermuda Pattern Lantern

Overview

Lantern made of sheet steel. The base measures 208mm x 223mm; height 381mm (top of chimney) 444.5mm (top of handle). Three glass panels (front and two sides) to project light in three directions with the rear side being the door where a candle could be placed. There is a chimney with a conical cap that is divided into eight sectors and is hinged at the front with a catch on the rear. A foldable metal handle is attached to the sides and can be hung or folded down when in use.

Historical information

Lanterns like the Bermuda Pattern Lamp were used to light passageways in storage areas for gunpowder and cordite (gun magazines), where light was needed in three directions.

Contextual Information

This lantern is an example of a “Bermuda Pattern”, a variation made in 1886 of the “Partition (Both-Ways) Lantern”. The Bermuda Pattern, along with other variations, may have been used at the Princess Royal Fortress’s Underground Magazine from 1893 through to when electricity was introduced.
