Medal commemorating 1954 Royal Visit of Queen Elizabeth II
1954Circular, gilt brass commemorative medal suspended from a bar. It was presented to Victorian children on the occasion of the 1954 Royal Visit of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh.
The bar has the words 'PRESENTED TO THE CHILDREN BY THE GOVERNMENT OF VICTORIA' beneath two decorative motifs. It has a metal loop at the top through which a metal pin is inserted for attachment,and another below which connects the medal to the bar.
The maker's name is embossed on the back of the bar.
The obverse of the medal features the conjoined profile busts of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip facing right. The text 'QUEEN ELIZABETH II' and 'DUKE OF EDINBURGH' is embossed around the upper circumference of the medal, and the maker's name appears below.
The reverse of the medal features the Royal cypher surmounted by the Queen's Crown, with the text 'ROYAL VISIT 1954 VICTORIA' embossed below.
This medal was issued to school children to commemorate the visit of the Queen to Victoria from 24 February to 9 March 1954. She was the first reigning monarch to tour Australia, arriving in Sydney with her husband Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh) on 3 February 1954 and departing the country from Fremantle on 1 April.
