Overview

World War One era French Wounded Emergency Fund (FWEF) enamel fundraising badge. It is in the shape of a vertically orientated marquise (oval with pointed ends).
It features a bright blue enamel background with a white shield containing a Red Cross and the words 'FRENCH WOUNDED EMERGENCY FUND' in black lettering on the lower half, and the Gallic rooster (le coq gaulois) in red and black on the upper half.
There is a thin gold border around the outside of the badge. There is a small amount of blue enamel loss from the lower edge.
The reverse is also gilded and has a pin clasp for attachment. The maker's details are impressed into the lower point of the reverse.

Historical information

The French Wounded Emergency Fund (FWEF) was an English humanitarian organisation established during the early stages of World War One (circa 1914–1915) to deliver medical supplies, clothing, and comfort items to military hospitals treating injured soldiers in France.
Badges such as this were sold to the public across Allied nations (including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia) to raise charitable donations for the wartime medical effort.
