Medal commemorating the Centenary of Victoria, 1934 & Centenary of Melbourne, 1935
1934 - 1935Silvered bronze circular medal issued to commemorate the Centenary of Victoria in 1934 and the Centenary of Melbourne in 1935.
The obverse features a scene of the landing at Portland Bay with a two masted sailing ship moored off a beach and a dinghy landing on the shore. In the foreground, the text 'PORTLAND 1834' is embossed and around the upper rim are the words 'CENTENARY OF VICTORIA 1934'.
The rim is plain and the maker's mark is embossed on the lower left of the medal.
The reverse features an early pioneer wearing a hat. He is leaning on a tall walking stick and is positioned on the south bank of the Yarra River looking across to the city of Melbourne, At his feet, the date '1835' is embossed and above him is the text 'CENTENARY OF MELBOURNE 1835'.
There is an attached metal loop at the top through which a metal ring is threaded. A ribbon would have been inserted through the ring with a pin for suspension.
The centenary celebrations took place between October 1934 and June 1935. They served to boost community morale and signify progress as Victoria emerged from the worst of the Great Depression. They were distributed to school children throughout Victoria.
