PLATE: CALYX, SUBIACO METHODIST CHURCH

Overview

Off-white cake plate with 'Subiaco Methodist Church' stamped in blue on a blue scroll on its rim. The manufacturer's mark stamped on the reverse features a blue swan above a blue scroll with 'Calyx' and 'Perth. W.A.' below. Used by the Subiaco Methodist Church in Bagot Road at its social functions. According to Mrs. Ivy Bannear of Shenton Park these plates were used in the 1930's and were probably part of a full set of plates, cups and saucers. Calyx ware came into production in December 1921. The company went insolvent and the State Government foreclosed on it, but ran it as Calyx from 1925 to 1941 when it was taken over by Bristile and the Calyx mark was changed to Bristile. [Information supplied by Mr. John Thomson, author of a book on Calyx ware.]
