BOTTLE CORKER
Provenance unknown. This bottle corker may have been used for corking champagne or home brewed beer. The corks were boiled to soften them before they were inserted in corker. This tool is made of wood, and has a slim cylindrical shape, tapering slightly towards the base, which is hollowed out to the top of bottle. The main section is hollow and a section of the upper half is cut away, allowing for the insertion of the cork into the metal lined lower section of the corker. At the top is a wooden knob, from which a dowel extends through the corker. The dowel has a metal cap at end, and a small rubber ring washer is just beneath the knob at top. Raising the knob allows for the insertion of the cork which is then forced into the bottle as pressure is applied by hand to the knob.
