SHAVING MUG: DECORATED WITH SCENE FROM GREEK MYTHOLOGY
White earthenware shaving mug with a shallow perforated bowl at the top and a wide spout at side to hold shaving brush. The simple loop handle has an orange outline, as has the rim of the bowl and the spout. There are a few green leaves decorating the upper rim and a colourful scene of a shepherd and three women. The name of the artist, Angelica Kauffman, appears to the right of the picture. There is no manufacturer's mark but the style of the decoration suggests that the mug dates from the 1920s.
Design on mug possibly represents the Judgment of Paris in Greek mythology. Paris (the Prince of Troy) was brought up as a shepherd. He was called upon to judge which of 3 goddesses (Hera, Athene and Aphrodite) was the fairest and should receive the Apple of Discord. He favoured Aphrodite who promised him Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world. His abduction of Helen led to the Trojan War.
