Overview

A light brown rectangular cardboard ticket from the official opening of the electric railway line to Armadale. One side of the card has red text which reads [OFFICIAL OPENING / OF THE ELECTRIC / RAILWAY / ARMADALE 11-4-1992]. The opposite side has text written in black which reads [W.A.G.R. / ARMADALE / TO / PERTH / 9178].

Historical information

The railway arrived in the City of Armadale in 1889 and allowed for the fast transport of people and goods from the district to markets in Perth and Fremantle. Trains were originally steam followed by diesel and then in 1992 electric. On 11/4/1992 the the official opening of the electrification of the line to Armadale was officially opened. Work had began on the electrification of the line in September 1991.

Statement of significance

This object is a part of a collection of that is associated with the history of rail within the City of Armadale. The arrival of the railway to the City of Armadale in 1889 saw the district change from one that was isolated from Perth due to distance (approx 30km from Perth) and a poorly maintained road. to one that had quick access via the train line. The train line meant not only the rapid transport of people but also of mail, news, ice and goods into and out of the district.
