Souvenir Album of Postcards Sent by Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE, 6351
c. 1916Souvenir album of postcards with a green front cover. On the cover is the British Coat of Arms (1901-1952) and some text while the album originally contained 12 postcards only 9 remain all handwritten on the back. There is light tissue paper between each card.
Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

Card 1a “With all the chaps running round / and [sic] you I like to Be By myself / Well Darling I Will close / Now With love and kisses / from your ever loving / Sweetheart Ted / P.S. Write to No. 6351 Private E.C. Mouchemore / 28 AI 7 [sic] / England / That Will find me xxx”
Card 2 “Durban as seen from New Town Hall”
Card 2a “They gave us a great tea / hear tonight there was about / 1000 of us hear they are coming / in all the Time I could drink / the tea all day what we get / on the Boat is deadly. There / is some kids Playing the Band / it gets on your nerves The / one we have on the Boat / is enough. I heardly known / What I have Wrote about it is heard / to write on the Boat”

Card 3a “see so many niggers hear as / durBan don’t know what they / are loke up town it is Raining / and much colder that durBan / Well love We got off We had / to march up to town about / Two miles from the Boat It / is not a Bad Place not as good / as DurBan there is a lot / of Blacks hear too not [sic] / as DurBan Blacks There is no / Ricksha hear”

Card 4a “[sic] 17.1.1917 / Well Dear We are at the cape / it is very pritty coming passed/ cape of good hope very Big / hills it is a funny look Bay / We mite Be hear two or three days / six troop ships left hear yes / terday I don’t know what the / Town is like we mite get off / about two or go for a march / We are all ask out to Tea / to some hall To night. There / is one hill as we come in / nothing But guns. You don’t”

Card 5a “hear again I hope I am not / away to long just see a / Bit of the war and come home / I hope to Be Back By next / year Have you seen any thing / of that chap that came down to / The shop If he does come don’t / have too much to do with him / This is a great Place for / gambling The Play cards day / and night”
Card 6 “Paddling Pool, Ocean Beach, Durban”
Card 6a “I must of told you things / two or three Times I Posted / a letter on Board and in DurBan / We have sports on hear to day / there is not much Room for any / thing we are Packed Pritty / tight. We get Tin Rabbit / once a week to day. It was walking round the fish got / a good Dinner. Well love I Would / just like to Be able to fly and / see you and come back”
Card 7 “Swimming Baths, Ocean Beach, Durban”
Card 7a “on her. They say we mite Be at / the cape for some Time There are / some German Boats out. We are only / about five miles of land now Three / or four other Boats ahead of us. 16.1917 / We Passed two lighthouses and and two / Boats We can still see land the water / is like glass to day just seen a Big / shark I think we will Be at / The hope to night or tomorrow / I am going to Post this there if / I can I don’t know what to / write about I think”
Card 8 “The Bay Esplanade, Durban”
Card 8a “It is no good to a white man for work / It is verry hot and mugge. Plenty of Fever / They say there is someone dying every / day, One of our chaps was pritty near / killed with a car tried to jump on while / she was going he ducked out of the / ranks. There is a Big sea running to / night 3 days Time We hope to / be at the Cape and then after that / look out for Tin fish go of a guard / day and night all around her with our / Pop guns There is something like 1500 / of us on her she has got about / 2000 Pounds of copper and other metal”
Card 9 “Gardiner Street towards Station, Durban”
Card 9a “They let me go again not meny / [sic] there it is very Pritty and well / layed out They have a lovely Beach / I was in swimming just the thing / I have seen all these Places I can tell / you I had a good time The only Thing The / shops were closed and could not get any / Beer or Girls I was speaking to two in / one little fruit shop But the lads say / They are verry cold They have no / Time for the Australians There were / five chaps missed to Boat all the / 28 turned up. I would of given any / thing to of had you hear dear / there may come a day When we / come come in a [sic]”
