Overview

A small black and white photograph of two local children. They are standing together and looking directly at the camera. They stand barefoot on sand in a landscape of bare sand with a few small bushes scattered across it. In the distance behind them are four (4) machine gun carriages. Others can be seen even further back. The image has a white border on three sides with the top having been cut off at an angle. The image is in good condition. The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription in black ink.

Historical information

Bir el Esani was to the west of Beersheba and was one of the locations from which General ALLENBY directed strikes to attack Beersheba.

Contextual information

On 19 July 1917 the 10th Light Horse deployed to El Melek where other units of the Australian Mounted Division were concentrated. On arrival at Bir el Esani the brigade crossed the wadi and bivouacked for the night watering its horses.
