First World War Black and White Photographic Postcard of the Dome of the Rock
1916 - 1919A small black and white photograph showing an ornate building with surrounding landscape. The building appears to be octagonal in shape topped by a large dome. In front of the building is an open grass area with trees and buildings to each side. There is a paved area at the front of the image with a set of 3 steps that lead up to the grass . The reverse of the image has the proforma printing of part of a postcard and an inscription. The photograph has a small border and is in good condition.
The Dome of the Rock is one of the oldest Mosques in Jerusalem. Following the liberation of Jerusalem, soldiers on leave were able to visit the city and its sites. Many documented these visits through photographs.
