Overview

This is a hand cranked Dazey Glass Butter Churn No. 40 which was patented on February 14 1922 for use in the kitchen. The base is a 3 quart squarish glass jar with rounded edges and a screw-on metal lid. Inside the jar are 4 small wooden paddles that are attached to a vertical iron rod. This rod pierces the lid and connects up to the gearing system above the lid which is powered by an iron crank handle with a turned wood handle. The operator would remove the lid and pour the cream into the jar base. The lid would then be reattached and the crank handle turned until the butter formed.

Historical information

In the early years of the 20th century, E.B. Jones developed a small glass churn for home use. Nathan Dazey purchased Jones' business and relocated it in St. Louis, Missouri as the Dazey Churn & Manufacturing Co Dazey churns were made up until about 1945. Although best known for its glass churns, the company also made metal churns, can openers, knife sharpeners and other kitchen products.

Contextual Information

Whilst this churn features patent number 40 it differs from the standard #40 model in the following ways

1. The Dazey embossing on the glass is in the "bulls eye" pattern that was used between 1912 and 1922 and discontinued with the #40
2. The Dazey embossing says "St Louis USA" rather than "St Louis MO"
3. It is missing the embossed flower on the bottom of the glass which was standard from 1922 onwards

It is possible that this was a pre 1922 prototype of the #40
