GENERAL EMBROIDERY, SKIRT
Half of a Chinese skirt which was popular between 1860s and 1905 and was often worn with large embroidered tunics. The skirt consists of a waistband of silk, below which the black cotton fabric has been replaced. It may be that the skirt has been altered for the westen market. The ground fabric of the skirt is light weight figured silk, having a large framed panel in the front. This is surrounded by 12 pleats with embroidered braid to the right, and 12 pleats with embroidered braid the left. The back embroidered panel (which would have been the same as the front) has been removed. The front embroidered panel is 450mm x 330mm.
