GENERAL EMBROIDERY, PANEL

Overview

Beautiful example of the style of Chinese embroidery used on informal robes in the early 20th C

This hand embroidered panel s beenworked on a heavy weight black silk. The floss silk embroidery shows motifs of butterflys, peonies, and sprays of flowers. Knots can also be seen. As evidenced by the joins, this panel was most probably a taken from a formal costume which has been reconstructed to create a rectangular piece. This may have happened in Europe where the exotic Chinese garments were repurposed to suit the western styles of the day.
