Signed 1973 Claxton Shield Series baseball
This baseball has some indistinguishable signatures and an inscription giving details of the game in which it was used. The ball has a rubber and cork core around which are two snuggly-fitted pieces of discoloured white leather, sewn together with red stitching.
The 1973 Claxton Shield was the 34th annual Claxton Shield Series, an Australian interstate baseball championships. It was held in Perth, Western Australia from January 5-14. Games were played at Subiaco Oval. The winning pitcher for Western Australia was Ray Michell in Game 3. The hand-written inscription on the ball reads:

The Western Australian team went on to contest the final, however lost 5-4 to Victoria.

This match ball belonged to winning pitcher Ray Michell and was given to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the Michell Family, to be permanently retained on a loan basis.
The social and historic significance of this baseball lies in its provenance. It was used in the 1973 Claxton Shield Series by Ray Michell, one of the best pitchers produced in Western Australia. Ray was inducted into the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006 and the Baseball WA Hall of Fame in 2021.
