1938 Australian Baseball Carnival photograph - South Australian Baseball Team

Overview

This is a sepia-coloured photograph of the 1938 South Australian Baseball Team. The photo is mounted on grey cardboard, with a darker grey border around the image. Printed in black above the photograph is the name of the team and the name, location and year of the carnival in which the team competed. Printed below the photo are the names of team members, team officials, bat boy and President of the South Australian Baseball League. At the bottom of the cardboard mat is the name of the photographic studio.

Historical information

The 1938 Australian Baseball Carnival was the fifth annual Claxton Shield Championships, an Australian national baseball tournament. It was held at the Western Australian Cricket Ground (the WACA) and Subiaco Oval in Perth from 3 to 13 August; the first time Perth had hosted the Shield. New South Wales won the Shield for the second time, successfully defending their title from the previous year. Hosts Western Australia had their best finish, losing to New South Wales in the final to finish second overall. The other participating teams were Victoria and South Australia.

Contextual Information

This photograph of the South Australian baseball team that competed in the 1938 Australian Baseball Carnival in Perth, was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the family of Glen Dunstan. Glen was vice-captain of the Western Australian team, playing second bag, and was an outstanding base-runner and solid batter. He was representing his State for the third time.

Statement of significance

This image of an Australian interstate baseball team from the 1930s is a rare addition to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives' collection. It identifies people who were involved in a popular evolving social activity of that era. Belonging to a member of the Western Australian 1938 team, the photograph has good provenance.
