George Dickinson, Western Australian baseball pitcher – signed photograph

At 18 years of age, and pitching in 'B' grade, George Dickinson caught the eye of State selectors and was invited to play against the visiting Victorian team in 1936. From then, he was a regular member of the Western Australian Claxton Shield teams (1937, 1938, 1939, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952); Claxton Shield Outstanding Player 1950. On four occasions he was selected in the All-Australian team (1947, 1948, 1950, 1952) and captained the 1947 team. Dickinson was also selected in the Western Australian Diamond All-Star Team 1934‒2008 as a pitcher.

Dickinson's playing record included an earned run average of 0.82 over an eight-year period (1938‒1941, 1947‒1950) where he earned a 38‒14 win-loss record in the WA State League. On average, he would strike out 8.5 batters for every nine innings pitched and would rarely give up a walk. He pitched 488.3 innings, struck out 627 batters, walked 100 batters and gave up only 45 earned runs. He had 293 at bats and safely hit 100 times. His batting average was .341.

George Dickinson was inducted into the Baseball Australia Hall of Fame in 2005 and in 2021 he was an inaugural inductee into the Baseball WA Hall of Fame. Throughout his long playing career, George was considered to be one of the best pitchers in Western Australia and Australia.
