War Service medal from South Australian P.M.G. Department presented to Walter Frederick Scriven
c. 1919Circular, bronze medal recognising the war service of W.F. Scriven and presented to him by fellow officers of the Postmaster-General's Department in South Australia.
The obverse has the name 'W'F'Scriven' engraved in an arc following the edge of the medal, under which the words 'From Fellow Officers PMG's Department SA' are written horizontally and 'In appreciation of services in the Great War 1914-19' in an arc following the lower edge. There is a thin ropelike internal border inside the plain edge of the medal.
There is a metal ring at the top of the medal through which a loose metal ring is held. A red, white and blue ribbon is threaded through the metal ring.
The reverse depicts a corner view of the South Australian General Post Office building in Adelaide.
Walter Frederick Scriven was born in West Hindmarsh, South Australia on 14 July 1894. He was a 22 year old draughtsman when he enlisted on 25 September 1916 as an Honorary Lieutenant with the 32nd Battalion, 13th Reinforcement.
He had previously served as a Commissioned Officer with the 76th Senior Cadets and the 76th Infantry Citizen Forces, and was seconded on appointment to the A.I.F.
He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A30 Borda on 23 June 1917. He trained in the UK and then served in France, where he was transferred to the 5th Pioneer Battalion. He returned to Australia 23 June 1919 aboard the SS Orita.
The medallion was presented to Walter by fellow officers of the South Australian Postmaster-General's Department (P.M.G.). Walter's name also appears on the Honour Board which was dedicated to 'Officers of S.A. Post, Telegraph and Telephone Department who joined the Australian Expeditionary Forces 1914-18' by their fellow officers.
