Civil Defence Queensland Messenger (M) badge
c. 1940 - 1945World War Two Civil Defence Queensland Messenger (M) enamel badge in the shape of a diamond, surmounted by a King's Crown.
The upper black enameled section features the words 'CIVIL DEFENCE', while the lower yellow enameled section features the capital letter 'M'. The borders of the badge, the crown and the internal lettering are gold. The crown has red enamel inserts.
The reverse of the badge has two horizontal lugs for attachment. The badge number '936' appears vertically between the lugs and the maker's details below that.
During World War Two, Queensland’s civil defence was coordinated by the state government and the Department of Home Security. It relied heavily on civilian volunteers who served as Air Raid Wardens, staffed Voluntary Air Raid Precaution (ARP) posts, and enforced 'brown-out' lighting restrictions to protect major population centres from potential aerial bombardments.
"M" stands for Messenger, designating a volunteer courier or communication role within the Civil Defence organisation.
