Sailors & Soldiers Church of England Help Society enamel badge
c. 1915World War One era Sailors & Soldiers Church of England Help Society enamel badge. It features a prominent white Maltese Cross centred on a circular dark red/brown translucent enamel background. A raised metallic gold King's Crown sits over the centre of the cross.
The outer metal rim features the embossed text 'SAILORS & SOLDIERS CHURCH OF ENGLAND HELP SOCIETY' The words are quite hard to read due to the lack of contrast between the gold lettering and the red/brown enamel.
The reverse has a pin clasp for attachment. The maker's details 'WALLACE BISHOP BRISBANE' are impressed on the reverse.
These badges were issued as fundraising, volunteer, or support organisation pins primarily during wartime. The Sailors & Soldiers Church of England Help Society organisation worked under the auspices of the Church of England to provide welfare, spiritual aid, and recreational facilities for off-duty military service personnel.
A WWI fundraising ribbon produced for Lavender Day, ANZAC Club and Huts is also held in the collection and features a graphic of the same badge.
