Overview

Triangular souvenir maritime pennant in horizontal orientation made from a black felt base with printed white, red, blue, gold and green detailing.
The graphics and text on the pennant are screen-printed using oil-based paint or thick lacquer ink.
The wide end of the pennant has two fabric ties attached to the edge for hanging. On the left, there is a white flagpole with the flag of the Adelaide Steamship Company Limited (white with a blue cross and a central red star) flying from it.
The central illustration graphic depicts a twin-screw motor ship sailing on stylised green waves, with smoke trailing from its single funnel and birds flying above.
The bolded text reads 'T.S.M.V. MANUNDA' beneath the ship hull. A flowing white banner on the right side reads 'THE ADELAIDE STEAMSHIP CO. LTD.'
The reverse is plain with the exception of the maker's tag, which reads 'SUPPLIED BY Angus & Coote, BADGE SPECIALISTS, 500 GEORGE ST. SYDNEY'.

Historical information

TSMV Manunda was laucnhed in 1929 and primarily served passenger routes between Melbourne, Sydney, Fremantle, and Cairns.
Souvenirs like this were widely sold to passengers aboard the passenger liner during its civilian coastal service years.
During World War Two, the vessel was requisitioned and converted into the AHS Manunda (Australian Hospital Ship). The ship survived the bombing of Darwin in 1942. After the Japanese surrender, Manunda was despatched to Singapore to repatriate ex-POWs and civilian internees who had been imprisoned in Changi Prison. She also sailed to Labuan in Borneo to pick up ex-POWs and civilian internees from Batu Lingtang Camp. This included the 24 surviving Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) sisters who had been aboard the Vyner Brooke when it was sunk by the Japanese in February 1942.

The Manunda returned to commercial service after the war. In September 1956, the ship was withdrawn from its longtime Australian coastal passenger service and sold to the Japanese shipping firm Okadagumi Line. It was renamed the Hakone Maru. The company's plans for the ship fell through and the ship was scrapped in Osaka in June 1957.
