1897 Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee souvenir commemorative medallion
1897Souvenir commemorative medallion produced to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (1837-1897).
The medallion is made from white metal and is suspended from a Queen's Crown pin in the same white metal. A piece of red, white and blue ribbon is attached to the crown.
It features a veiled bust of the Queen facing left on the obverse, with the words 'VICTORIA REGINA 1837-1897' around the edge
On the reverse, the words 'VICTORIA REG. ET IMP.' (Victoria Regina et Imperatrix in Latin or Queen Victoria and Empress of India in English) extend around the upper edge, meeting the upper parts of a floral wreath. This features the various floral emblems of the United Kingdom. The central area has horizontal text listing biographical details of the Queen - 'BORN 1819; CROWNED 1838; MARRIED 1840; SIXTIETH YEAR 1897'.
There is a hole in the top of the medallion through which a metal ring is threaded for attachment to the crown above.
The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria was officially celebrated on 22 June 1897 to mark the 60th anniversary of her accession on 20 June 1837. She was the first British monarch to reach this milestone. This has since been surpassed by Queen Elizabeth II.
