c. 1900An exquisite drawstring hand woven beaded evening bag made in France circa 1920.
Drawstring bags, also called Dorothy bags, Dorcas bags or Dolly Bags were fashionable evening bags for ladies in late 19th and early 20th centuries. The shiny beads glistened in the candlelight giving a glamourous effect.
Tiny gilded metal seed beads and red glass seed beads in a geometric design.
Beaded chain strap looped through beaded loops at top of purse created a handle when drawn up.
Twisted beaded fringe 40 mm long at the base. The sandy coloured silk lining is well worn.
