'The Boys' Book of Aeroplanes' by T. O'Brien Hubbard and Charles C. Turner
1912Antique book entitled ''The Boys' Book of Aeroplanes' by T. O'Brien Hubbard and Charles C. Turner, with a separate chapter on 'Model Aeroplanes' separately authored by E.W. Twining.
It has colourful cover and spine illustrations on a green cloth background. The cover depicts a biplane flying in front of a white cloud bank in a blue sky above a rural landscape. The spine has a similar design in miniature.The publisher's name appears at the bottom of the spine.
The book is profusely illustrated with 60 historic photographs.
Squadron Leader Thomas O'Brien Hubbard MC, AFC was born on 14 Aug 1882 in London.
He was a very early flier - Royal Aero Club Certificate No 222, in 1912; up until then, he had been the Secretary of the Royal Aero Club, but transferred to the Royal Flying Corps as a Second Lieutenant (on probation) in July 1912.
In 1911 he had helped to translate Robert Petit's "How to build an aeroplane' from the French, including the prediction that aluminium "will soon be completely abandoned in aeroplane construction".
He wrote several other books, including "The Boys' book of Aeroplanes" (1913).
After WWI he continued in the Royal Air Force in Egypt, Palestine and, later, Bircham Newton in Norfolk. His final posting was as commander of the R.A.F. station in Hinaidi, Iraq from 1929-31, and he then retired as a Wing Commander.
