Shaw Family
1917Studio portrait of the Shaw family in 1917. Mr Shaw (William) is seated on the left and is wearing a three-piece suit with tie and white shirt with foldover collar. He appears to be wearing black button boots. Mrs Shaw (Edith) is standing at the back and wears a dark dress or skirt and jacket, a white high collared blouse with cameo broach and dark shoes . The dress comes to the top of the ankles. The jacket or top of dress has a large collar and buttons down the front. Olive is standing at the front next to her father. She is wearing a long sleeved dress with dropped waist, cuffs which half cover the hands, a large light coloured frilly collar and many lines of self-tucking down the front of the bodice. She has long black socks and strap shoes and a large light coloured ribbon at the top of her hair. Will, the baby is sitting on a plant stand leaning against his mother. He is wearing a long gown which has short sleeves and a wide skirt. It is white or very light in colour. He is holding something in his right hand, possibly a rattle.
William Shaw was born 10/02/86 in England. Arrived in W A in 1897 with father Peter. Married Edith Jane Marsh from Karridale on 26th December 1909 at Perringulup Great Southern, before returning to Perth for work. (Her parents farm there, Rose Hill Farm). Lived firstly in 41 Claremont Crescent (3rd house up from Stirling Rd), then built and moved to 21 Stirling Rd in Dec 25th 1917. The house never finished because of hardships of 1st World War and then depression. Had four children, Sarah, (called Olive) b.11/06/1911, William Alfred b.29/04/1917, Arthur Edward b.18/08/1919 and George James b.03/03/1922. Was a jeweller by trade.
