TOOL: RADIAL COMPASS, LIPFERT FAMILY

Subcollections
Overview

A wing compass with one leg pointed at the foot [pivot], the other foot made in the form of a race blade. A curved wing enables the legs to be held in position by means of a turn screw. The blade is in the form of a U-shaped cutter which excavates a groove [race] when pulled over the surface of leather. It is used when cutting a groove parallel to an edge, or for a circle. It enables stitching to be recessed. The number '2' and '?Dixon' are stamped on the wing. [Ref. R.A. Saleman: Dictionary of Leatherworking Tools London 1986]. Presumed to have been used by Otto Lipfert who had leatherworking among his many hobbies.
