Western Australian State baseball uniform blazer pocket
A Western Australian State baseball team blazer pocket, worn by team member Mel O'Hern. Made of black woollen material, it is embroidered in yellow thread with the word 'Baseball' above a half-shield, two crossed baseball bats and a baseball. Embroidered on the shield is a black swan with red and white detailing. Below the baseball is a scroll holding the words 'Western Australia' in yellow thread. On the bottom edge of the pocket are the dates '1963' in green thread and 1962-63 in yellow thread.
This State baseball team blazer pocket was part of the uniform of Mel O'Hern when he represented Western Australia in the 1962 and 1963 interstate Claxton Shield Series. 1963 was also the first year that O’Hern represented Australia on the mound.
The dates are embroidered in yellow to denote years of State selection, and in green for Australian team selection.

The baseball blazer pocket was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by Mel O'Hern. Mel's baseball career spanned more than 20 years from the mid-1950s to 1980.
A four-time Western Australian representative in the Claxton Shield Championship (1962, 1963, 1969/70 & 1972/73), four-time President's Medal winner (1963, 1966/67, 1968/69 & 1969/70), Mickle Medal winner (State team MVP) 1963; and Team Australia representative (1963 & 1972/73), Mel O'Hern was inducted into the Baseball WA Hall of Fame in 2021.

This pocket patch is a well-preserved, unique item of baseball memorabilia, from an outstanding and much-honoured Western Australian sportsman. It has historical and social significance and comes with impeccable provenance from a member of the Baseball WA Hall of Fame.
