Overview

A black leather baseball catcher's mitt with black lacing, yellow stitching and foam padding for the wrist area. Gold-coloured lettering printed on the palm, inside thumb and fingers includes 'Descente' (the maker's name), 'Gold Spirit' (logo), 'Excatch', 'Professional Model', 'Atlanta.1996' and 'DES-102'. Embroidered in gold thread on the back of the thumb is 'Australia 35'. The Descente maker's symbol in the form of an embroidered patch, has been stitched to the outside of the wrist band. The patch is a dark blue oval shape with a gold border and three gold downward facing arrows in the centre.

Historical information

Baseball had its second appearance as an official Olympic medal sport at the 1996 games in Atlanta. There were six Western Australian baseball players representing Australia, including the catcher, John Moore.

Eight teams competed, including Cuba (gold), Japan (silver), USA (bronze), South Korea, Nicaragua, Italy, the Netherlands and Australia, who had a 2‒5 winning record to finish 7th.

Contextual Information

John Moore is a significant player in the history of baseball in Western Australia. He was a four-times premiership player with State league team Perth; played for Australia from 1993–1996; represented Western Australia at Claxton Shield championships (with WA Brewers, Perth Heat, and Western Heelers) 1988‒2000, and was a Claxton Shield Champion in 1991, 1996 and 2000.

Moore retired in 2004 after playing 387 games in Australia. In 2021 he was inducted into the Baseball WA Hall of Fame and his donated glove represents his contribution to the Baseball WA Museum and Archives' Hall of Fame memorabilia.
