WWI poem or song - 'Somebody's Girl' by R.W. Griffiths

c. 1915
Overview

Cream coloured card with a red border containing the words of a poem or song entitled 'Somebody's Girl'. It was sold to raise money for two Great War charities - Lady Arthur Paget's Blind Soldiers' Fund and the British Red Cross Society's Funds. The lyrics extol the virtues of the Red Cross nurse and recognise the sacrifice of martyred British nurse, Edith Cavell.
There is a graphic design in the top centre of the card showing two crossed flags - the Union Jack and the Royal Standard - with a King's Crown above them.
At the bottom of the card are the publisher's details and the price - one penny.

"Somebody's Girl" - a heroine too
"Somebody's Girl": with heart so true.
Somebody's sweetheart, or sister may be,
Somebody's angel, a nurse now is she.
One of the bravest - the "real heroine,"
The noblest and truest the world's ever seen,
She's a "Red Cross Nurse" of the "Nightingale" breed,
"God bless them all," no matter their creed.

"Somebody's Girl," - the pride of the home,
Who, like NURSE CAVELL, her duty had done,
Leaving the "comforts" and "pleasures" of life,
In order that "she" may take part in the strife:
Nursing the wounded and cheering the sick,
So loving and patient, gentle and quick.
She never complains, although hard be her lot
But cheerily smiles as she tends to each cot.

Remember "them" too each time when you pray,
And whenever you pass them (now mind what I say),
Remember "they're" women, the bravest and best,
The whole world over, North, South, East and West.
Respect and honour them (like Tommy and Jack),
Remember to "cheer them" when "they" come back.
Because the "Red Cross Nurse" is an angel on earth
And "Somebody's Girl" who has proved her worth.
