Glazed pottery bust of an airman - J. Shergold

Overview

Handmade, one of a kind pottery bust of a WWII era airman. He is wearing his leather flying helmet and jacket. His flying goggles are on top of his head, but he is wearing his oxygen mask. Originally there would have been a hose connecting the mask to the oxygen supply, but this has broken off and been lost over time. On the base are the words 'Head of J. Shergold', presumably the model for the piece.

Historical information

The J. Shergold referred to on the base of this item may have been John Shergold who served with the R.A.A.F. during World War Two. His service number was 51842 and he served as a wireless, radio and radar technician within Australia for the duration of the war.
