Royal Doulton Toby Jug - 'Captain Prop the Pilot'
1989 - 1991Royal Doulton three-quarter body toby jug featuring an RAF pilot dressed in his fur-lined leather flying jacket, cream scarf and leather gloves, one of which he has removed. On his head, he is wearing a leather flying helmet with his goggles resting on top. He appears to be gazing wistfully into the sky.
On the base, the maker's details including their logo and the model number are written.
'Captain Prop the Pilot' (D6812) was from The Doultonville Collection, which comprised 25 jugs in total and was produced between 1983 and 1991. The collection depicted different characters in different trades and professions, from the mythical town of Doultonville - which was a typical English village life representation.
'Captain Prop' was designed by William K. Harper and produced by Royal Doulton of Burslem, England, from 1989 to 1991. According to the American Toby Jug Museum, "Gerald Prop is Doultonville's famous ace with several victories to his credit: hearty, flamboyant and a daredevil acrobat of the skies. He runs a small flying school from which he operates a flying circus and the people of Doultonville are enthralled by spectacular stunt flying at the small aerodrome on the outskirts of the city. His girlfriend is a society lady who has her own biplane. She has made several adventurous solo long-distance fights. Gerald owns an historic town house in Old Doultonville, has a cottage in the country and drives a high-powered sports car, often too fast."
