LUCKNOW HOSPITAL

1981 - 1982
Overview

Colour print. The rear of Lucknow Hospital from St Quentin Avenue, just before demolition. It is a two storey, tiled-roof building with enclosed verandahs and a metal fire escape from the upper floor to the back entrance. On the right is a brick garage with [LUCKNOW] above the doors. A rotary clothes line is behind the wire fence. There are two parked cars and a shopping trolley in the foreground.

Historical information

The two-storey Lucknow Hospital at 331 Stirling Highway, next to the Town Hall was built in 1934, for Matron E Smith. It took its name from its predecessor, a ‘convalescent’ hospital where Bethesda Hospital is now located. The hospital benefitted for many years from a working partnership between doctor Mayrhofer and the three McMullan sisters. The hospital was purchased by the state government in 1954 and was well used by Claremont doctors until its closure in 1980. Dr Jacob Bercov recalled delivering babies, giving anaesthetics, and performing appendectomies at both Lucknow and Bethesda Hospitals.
