Overview

Sepia print. Head and shoulders studio portrait of a man in World War I army uniform, buttoned to the neck, with epaulettes and breast pockets. It is mounted on light brown card with an embossed border to the print. Handwritten on rear [Sent by T. Peel/ Beeac].

Historical information

Robert Peel was headmaster of Claremont Government School on the corner of Humble Rd (now Bay View Terrace) and Princess Road from 1896 - 1900.

Moved from Victoria to Claremont for the purpose of teaching at Claremont. Married Mabel Edith Anderson in 1898 in Albany. Left Claremont School in October 1900 for position in the Goldfields at Kanowna. Mayor Langsford presented him with an electroplate tea service as a leaving gift, praised him for his 'sterling and manly character'.

Son born in Claremont 1899 - Robert Stirling Vere Peel. Died in 1968 in Victoria.

Daughter Hermione Rita Peel born in Kanowna in 1903.

Relocated to Victoria and became Inspector of Schools. Served in WWI.
