HOTEL CONTINENTAL, 25 VICTORIA AVENUE, CLAREMONT

Overview

Front elevation of a two-storeyed brickand iron building with an extended wing at either end with large gables, and a smaller gable on the centre section. There are turned double verandah posts on verandah and balcony which has a balustrade. On the fascia board in the centre is [HOTEL CONTINENTAL G.W.FENNER Proprietor]. There is a man on the balcony and several on the verandah. A window to the verandah has [DINING ROOM] on it. Along the footpath is a white scalloped picket fence with decorative posts in front of a low hedge and several shrubs.

Historical information

Hotel Continental was a large two storied federation style hotel at 25 Victoria Avenue opposite Jetty Road. Built by Ansell Freecorn 1896 overlooking Freshwater Bay. Advertised an omnibus that met all trains.

Demolished c.1970 and Continental Court apartments and surrounding townhouses built on site of hotel and beer garden.

In 1990s Claremont Hotel, on corner of Gugeri Street and Bay View Terrace, assumed the name The Claremont Continental or Continental Hotel causing confusion to reserachers.
