ST LOUIS ORIGINAL BUILDING - HINEMOA
Colour print. White painted weatherboard and iron building on high enclosed foundations. Steps lead from lawned area to the verandahs with wooden balustrades and posts with decorative brackets. The central door has sidelights and there is a sash window on either side. A central gable is surmounted by a plain cross. Mature trees surround the building and there is a low cyclone fence in the foreground.
The land was first purchased by a James Morrison, stock agent of Guildford, in 1876. In 1880 it was subdivied and two of the smaller lots (5 and 18) eventually beacame the school site. In 1908 George Henry Johnston built the first home on Lot 18 and named it Hinemoa. In 1937 the Roman Catholic Church of WA bought Lot 18 and Lot 5 which had never been cleared, in the hope of pursuading the Jesuits to move to WA, which they did and the land was transferred to them. In May 1938, Archbishop Prendiville opened St Louis School with just 21 students. Hinemoa was initially used a community quarters, a kitchen, dining area and chapel. The school eventually amalgamated with Loreto Convent to become the co-educational John XXIII College. When this moved to new buildings on the old Claremont Mental Hospital site, the original St Louis site was redeveloped as St Louis Estate retirement village and Hinemoa was retained as part of the facilities.
