c. 1900Lace, a costume accessory had been in vogue for 300 years. Handmade lace, needle or bobbin, was time consuming and expensive. Limerick lace was introduced in Ireland in 1843 as a quicker, cheaper and easier lace and to provide employment for women and girls during the Irish Famine of 1940s..
